Papst Licensing
The name Papst has been closely associated with the protection and licensing of intellectual property for over 70 years. The engineer and inventor, Hermann Papst (1902-1981) was not only an outstandingly versatile and creative thinker, but also had the gift of transforming ideas into useful products which found a receptive market. His inventions over a wide range of technical fields led to a total of over 400 patents. Established in the 1940s, his company, from which the Papst-Motoren GmbH & Co. KG grew, created no less than 600 patents and applications in the early 1990s for products developed in-house. One of the focuses of the resulting portfolio of patents were electronically driven motors such as Papst external rotor motors, brushless DC fans, and high precision electric motors for magnetic recording of sound, image and data applications. In 1993, Georg Papst, the son of Hermann Papst, established the Papst Licensing GmbH. The licensing-only company acquired the patent portfolio of the former Papst-Motoren and has since monetized it with outstanding success. The sons of Georg, Constantin and Daniel Papst follow that path as Managing Directors of Papst Licensing. The experience gained throughout the monetization is also made available to others.
As a patent licensing company operating worldwide Papst Licensing successfully licensed several hundred primarily electronic-related patents successfully concluding over 150 license agreements with leading companies in Europe, USA, Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan. Working together with an international network of patent attorneys, engineers and business experts Papst contacts the infringing parties directly and negotiates with them – worldwide. The objective is to conclude a licensing contract. In the event that negotiations with the party committing the infringement are not successful, PL conducts and finances legal proceedings and has many years of experience in litigation, especially in the USA.
Papst Licensing has the experience and successful track record to take effective action against patent infringers for a successful monetization of patents. It analyses products, technologies and markets, negotiates and drafts license agreements, monitors license contracts, and handles reminders and debt collection activities in the event of irregularities in the payment of royalties.
In addition to the global players like Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Canon, HP, LG, Samsung, Compaq, Seagate and IBM, over 90 other companies in Germany, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and the USA are amongst its licensees. 100 % of the world market for computer hard drives (HDD) and over 90 % of the world market for electric cooling fans, as used for example in computers, are licensed by Papst Licensing. Papst Licensing’s expertise makes available to small and medium-sized businesses the ability to participate in the world licensing market, which they would not otherwise be able to access.
