Suleman Mulla - Director of Tax & Zakat Services
Background
Suleman joined KPMG in Saudi Arabia in January 2003 and has grasped the Saudi Arabian concepts of Zakat and taxation and has been involved in international tax consulting and advisory work to multi-national companies. This advice includes corporate taxation and Zakat implications on all types of investments including financial model and agreement reviews. He has also been involved in providing complex advice on zakat and tax structuring from a Saudi Arabian perspective for various clients.
Professional and Industry Experience
Prior to joining the Jeddah office, Suleman worked in the International Tax service line at Andersen now part of KPMG in Johannesburg, South Arica. And prior to this he was a tax auditor for the South African Revenue Services in Durban and a company tax auditor at the Corporate Tax Centre, Sandton, Johannesburg. Suleman has worked on a large array of clients in various sectors most notably oil and gas, power & utilities, petrochemical, construction, communications and financial services.

- Advice on outbound structuring of investments in listed shares and real estate by large Saudi family business mainly into UK, Lebanon, GCC and US.
- Detailed tax advice and options on expansion by large Saudi food manufacturer into UK, UAE, Vietnam and China.
- Investment and agreement structuring advice to Japanese, US and other European companies entering Saudi Arabia with view to optimizing corporate and withholding taxes.
- Use of Saudi tax treaties to minimize taxes on royalty, licensing, technical support and other charges.
- Tax compliance services to global IT, power and construction companies.
- Advice and international structuring advice to number of private equity firms in Saudi.
- Saudi zakat planning options for local companies with regard to investments and deductible expenses.
- Saudi tax and zakat issues and comments relating to sukuk issuances, real estate and investment funds.
- Advice and support to financial institutions and multinational companies on exit strategy from Saudi Arabia.
- Use of offshore and GCC jurisdictions for Saudi and international tax planning and structuring especially with regard to tax/ zakat treatment and capital gains tax.
- Suleman regularly participates in the delivery of presentations at client seminars and is a key figure internally within KPMG Saudi Arabia for the content of and delivery of training to colleagues within the Tax and Zakat and Audit functions of the firm.
